Itinerary:
Join us for a long weekend of beautiful backcountry Nordic ski touring day trips in the Lake Louise area! If you're wondering what Nordic touring is about, check out the article in the Breeze: https://accedmonton.ca/2019-1-9-a-nordic-touring-primer/. This trip is about the tour not the turns, but it is mountain terrain; the trails are steep and narrow in places. You should be comfortable on blue runs downhill.

We'll be arriving Thursday evening, skiing Friday through Monday. Join for some or all of the 4 days.

We'll be selecting objectives in the Lake Louise area. Likely choices are tours such as Stanley Glacier, Chickadee Valley, Ross Lake, Baker Creek, and if we get bold, Molar Meadows. We might do Boom Lake for an easy trip on Thursday or Monday (but not on weekends; too crowded), or a long easy roll up Tokkum Creek if people are so inclined. Check out Chic Scott & Darren Farley's "Ski Trails in the Canadian Rockies" (available at Track'n'Trail and elsewhere) for the definitive beta on the trails. The tours we plan are rated "intermediate" in Scott & Farley. Some trail-breaking and route finding is likely. We stick to lower avalanche risk areas but some exposure is inevitable, so Winter in the Mountains or AST1 is required.

Accommodations are up to each participant. Lake Louise is convenient; Banff and Canmore are also suitable. Our base of operations will be the Lake Louise hostel, so that's a good place to stay if you can. We'll arrange carpools to the trailheads depending on participants' preferences. There's no fee for participation.
Required Items to Bring:

Skis: This trip is designed around Nordic touring (aka "light touring") gear: wide off-track cross-country skis with metal edges. AT and tele gear are OK too. Regular XC skis are not suitable; they are not wide enough and metal edges are required. Splitboards aren't fun on the rolling trails we'll be skiing.

Climbing skins (kicker or half skins are sufficient)

Avalanche beacon, shovel, and probe

Daypack

Suitable skis and skins can be rented from GearUp in Canmore (https://www.gearupsport.com). They offer Rossignol BC80 skis, ideal for these tours. Wilson Mountain Sports in Lake Louise also rents suitable stuff, as their "Skoki package". We can reserve club avy gear for those who need it; just let us know as early as possible.

Recommended Items to Bring:

Sunscreen

Insulated pad for sitting on at lunch stop

Thermos
