Itinerary:

With a good weather forecast, we would leave Edmonton around 5:00-5:30pm on Friday the 19th. The drive would be around four hours, but budget more, and the idea would just be to show up at Wildhorse Creek Rustic Camping Area, set up camp, and sleep. Camping there is free, but there is the new public lands camping pass to consider. It's $20 for three nights or $30 for a year. I won't be checking, but it is good to have for peace of mind. The next morning we will leave around 7:30 (earlier if people want) driving to Owen Creek Trailhead 12 km to the west. Setting out around eight on the Owen Creek Trail we should budget 5.5 hours (11 km, but steep and poorly marked) to Michelle lakes. We would arrive in time to eat lunch and set up camp. The afternoon can be spent climbing the peak to the north for a view of Wilson icefield. If that's too ambitious there are waterfalls and caves nearby to check out. The lake also has golden trout, which is neat if you dare to pack gear, but also means that there will certainly be helicopter traffic from rich fisherfolk. The next morning we would exit up the edge of the hanging valley to the southeast ridgeline, summit the little peak (or Mt. Owen for +2 hours), and drop into the south-facing drainage to rejoin Owen Creek. This exit route will likely take around 7 hours. Arriving at the cars at 4:00 at the latest we would be back in Edmonton before dark.

Required Items to Bring:

Helmet (liability, sorry), standard camping gear

We also need at least one InReach and some bear barrels / Ursacks since the area is completely alpine and treeless.

Recommended Items to Bring:

Headlamp, Bear spray

How to Get There:
Event Directions:   Follow Google Maps / signs to Rocky Mountain House. Proceed west past Nordegg on Hwy 11. Once you pass Abraham Lake (hard to miss) start looking for signs. Wildhorse Creek Rustic Camping Area is ~70 km west from Nordegg and ~18 km east of Saskatchewan Crossing. West of Abraham Lake you should see a little green sign on your right saying Wild Horse Creek. 200 m later there will be an unmarked gravel turnoff on your left which leads to the camping area.
Carpool Departure Time:   05:30 PM
Carpool Location:   Parking lot south of U of A Varsity Field (on google maps), outside of the Project Management Office
Carpool Directions:

Approach the U of A along 87 Ave NW. Turn onto 116 St NW west of the Butterdome and immediately turn right into the parking lot.

Notes:

Happy to collaborate for some meals.

I put the cost as zero dollars, but it depends on how the cost of gas works out, how people want to organize food, and whether they need to buy a public lands camping pass. For shared stuff (gas, some food), it's probably easiest to e-transfer as needed.
